In Association with Goldsboro Books & D H H Literary Agency

Let’s write together

The Goldsboro Writing Academy is the place to find the support, insight and tools you need to take your book from first idea to final draft. What makes the GWA extra special is that we combine inspiring writing tutors with experts in the publishing industry including top agents, editors from the big publishing houses, filmmakers, and industry professions. We don’t just want to help you write a book, we want to help you forge a career.

Creative writing courses to get you published

Why choose the Goldsboro Writing Academy

Writing can be a passion, or a therapy session, a best friend, a lifeline, a coffee when you’re desperate for one – it can (and should) be a joy. But it’s also hard work, an 80-100,000 word long-haul trip. You can get easily lost, and we want to offer you a map. At the Academy we are all writers, and we know that we need support and understanding to complete a novel.

We are looking to build a writing community, that will support your ideas, hopes and dreams while sharing the burden of any struggles and disappointments. Our inspiring tutors give you support, insight and the tools you need to develop the confidence to take your book from first idea to final draft. But writing your book is only a part of the journey. If you want your beautifully crafted stories to make it out into the world, you need to learn to ally your inner writer with some level-headed business sense. You need to understand how the publishing industry works – which means how books are sold, how agents select their authors, how writers are marketed, and how their brands are created. That is why we are building this community with Goldsboro Books and the DHH Literary agency.

Our aim is to take you from writer to author - focussing on the writing craft, but also helping you plan your career, with advice from publishing professionals, booksellers and the full resources of the D H H Literary Agency.

The Goldsboro Writing Community

Alongside our weekly sessions we offer Write Here, Write Now sessions to all of our students. These are weekly 90-minute writing sessions, with check-ins and goal setting, to help you find the time and discipline to write.

There are also online sessions with writers from all different genres, My Writing Life talks, where writers share their practice with you. In the past we have had sessions with Elly Griffiths, Josie Loyd, Mark Stay, Zulekhá Afzal, Jo Furniss, Graham Bartlett and others.

Plus, after the end of each course, we have monthly check-ins, to keep your writing practice going. We want to stay connected as a community and support each other not only in writing one book, but forging a career.

That is one of the reasons we highlight writers in conversation with their agents and editors, to model best practice and start to network from day one. We want to write together and succeed together.

Our weekly classes are hybrid, so you can attend on-line or in-person. They are livestreamed, either from Goldsboro Books Brighton, or from Goldsboro Books London, and recorded so you can watch them later.

We want you to be in the class that is right for you, so we always begin with a free consultation before the courses start, in-person or on-line, to see where you are in your creative life and find out more about your writing. Come and write with us.

“I thought that the course was great value for money. I couldn't believe the price when I looked at how much you packed into it. I didn't want the course to end. I was learning so much. Thank you so much for what I thought was an amazing course.”

Julian

“Thank you so much for an amazing year. I really appreciated the time you spent to read my work and give me honest feedback. The agents and industry people were fascinating. You must have an incredible list of industry contacts to call on, and great powers of persuasion, to get all these amazing people to come and talk to us.”

“A well thought out course with interesting speakers, all with valuable insights into the writing world. You also managed to assemble a great group of participants, all without exception keen to learn and to contribute to the discussions. David Headley was the real deal and we got an insight to the heart of the publishing world. I found the pitching we all did most weeks very helpful. It got me thinking about the essence of the stories I'm writing and what my "brand" should be as a writer. Your own contributions throughout the course were very insightful and I'm sure got everyone thinking about their writing in a positive and productive way.”

“This course is quite unlike anything I’ve done or seen. The focus on getting published makes it a perfect finishing school after courses aimed at the craft of writing. It was also great fun. Thank you so much!”
